ISSUES & POLITICAL CONCERNS
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SHERIFF:
NOT JUST AN ADMINISTRATIVE JOB
If someone were elected as Sheriff who has never even completed a basic police academy, she would be required to pass the rigorous entrance requirements and complete the physically and mentally demanding 18 week Washington Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year of taking office (RCW 36.38.025). Academies are located in Burien and Spokane and recruits live in dormitories for 4 1/2 months.
Effective service as Sheriff requires more than just a basic academy. Leadership and skills that can only be acquired through years of experience, education and training are critical. The Office of Sheriff is not a job for those who have virtually no relevant experience, it is not “just an administrative job,” it is not a job for someone who will be absent from the community for 4 1/2 months, it is not a job for those who have no support from law enforcement leaders or organizations, it is not a job for someone with a broad political agenda that has little to do with the duties and authority of a Sheriff.
Your Sheriff must also have the respect and relationships necessary to effectively collaborate with all law enforcement, community leaders, service providers and the public on mission critical public safety issues.
